The Eye's Have It...

Well, it started out as a good day.. today was weigh in day and I am down 2 lbs... very excited about that and actually thought about reaching into my hide away clothes to see how close I am to maybe moving into the next size which would be a misses or regular 16 not the 16W which I am wearing now and are getting baggy... but I figured  eh, might as well get as much wear out of my current jeans before they are ready for a new life..

I was feeling pretty good about my self, and being a saturday I decided to still put on some makeup (which on the weekend, I try to take a break from doing).

DH and I had back to back eye doctor appts this morning.. I was glad we were doing this because I have been noticing my right eye as becoming troublesome, particularly with night driving.

DH went first and I walked around the store gazing at a fabulous pair of Kate Spade frames, but I was really there to see how those new multi focal contacts would work for me.

As DH came out of the exam room he told me he was going to browse and  pick new frames. Fine, knock your socks off and I headed back to the exam room.

What the doc told me during the exam, absolutely floored me.. in fact I broke down and cried.
She told me that I had cataract in both of my eyes, the right eye was worse than the left.

WHAT?????????????,

I am freaking 53 years old.  Who get's cataract at 53???
I will tell you, I was stunned..
And here is the worse part, I can't do a damn thing about it until they grow and get creepy looking and ugly so I can scare all of the small children in the neighborhood.

And that could take 5 to 10 years.

I am so bummed, I can't not put my true feelings into words..

When I came out of the exam room, DH was enamored by his new designer frames.
I couldn't and didn't want to say a word, but as soon as we left the store .. I just let the water works go..

And so, here I sit, googling the shit out of the word "cataracts".

So I know things could be worse.. but it was just one of those things you don't expect to hear until you are 80 or something..

  1. OH honey - I have to google it too - I don't know what they are or what they mean as a diagnosis. I'm going to send you good vibes and pray though okay? And remember - that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger - and you my dear - are one strong cookie!

  2. Oh no....what a shock!!! I have heard about them and know they can be treated but I wonder why they wait so long???? Can you still see properly??? I would feel exactly the same as you ....I can only offer you big fat (((hugs))) Take care.

  3. Oh sweetie I am so sorry to hear that. My only question is why you have to wait...I admit to knowing nothing about opthamology. Maybe a second opinion? Whatever you find out, I know you will be just fine.

By the way, thanks for turning me on to Soap and Glory, I have gotten tons of compliments on my skin lately. Thank you.

  4. Oh no - I didn't think about that happening to anyone under 70. I'm sorry because I know it's a shock. Take care - a good cry allows helps.

  5. Oh bugger - that's awful news. And they really can't do anything yet? Even though they now know you're going to get them? That sucks the big one!! Thinking of you, darl ((Hugs))

  6. That sucks, so sorry! I know they always ask me about family history of cataracts whenever I go for an eye exam. I seem to remember them saying it can happen earlier if you do have a family history.

It just sucks. One more crappy thing about getting older.

BUT you lost 2 pounds!!!!! This news would have been much worse if you gained 2, I'm sure.

I hope you are feeling better.

  8. Barb-- my mom had cataracts at the same time, but she had hers taken care of.
Would you consider coming into NY for another opinion? If the night driving is bothering you then maybe you need a second opinion?
Email me at vsc40014@yahoo.com if you want me to get my mom's eye doc for you... she has had bilateral eye surgey and is FINE!!!
    You will not look weird.

    Loves!!!!

  9. How shocking! I think you should go have a second opinion with an opthamologist just to find out your options just like Dinnerland said. You do seem too young for this (me at 56 am still clear). You are right it is usually 80 year olds that we hear about.

    It's ok to cry.

  10. Oh Barbara, I'm so sorry. I agree with Sandy Lee on the second opinion. I am very happy for you for the two pounds; will send you good thoughts and big hugs on the eyes and hope you hear better news. xoxo

  11. Hey thanks everyone.. it really was a shocker to hear this news, but I agree that I should get a second opinion. Thanks V for the offer of your mom's doc (I may take you up on this..). I just spent the last 3 hours or so out in the yard (so I know I burned some calories there). I think I am going to go shopping for a pair of those OLD GEEZER sunglasses, you know the ones that wrap around the sides.. ha ha.. might as well get a few laughs.

  12. Barbara, that just SUCKS, I can totally understand how it would be a real shock. Good idea to get a second opinion. Don't bother buying the geezer glasses - they give 'em to you after surgery. ;) Hang in there, and congratulations on the two pounds. That's awesome.
